How the system works

Three filters, applied in order. A trade only exists when all three agree — the first two decide whether to be involved and on which side, the third decides when to act.

1 · PowerTrend — the regime gate

On the last trading day of each month, compare the monthly close to the 10-month simple moving average of monthly closes. Above it, the market is in an uptrend and only long-side positions are considered. Below it, only short-side or inverse positions are. This is checked once a month, not daily, which is the point: it filters out the noise that makes shorter-term trend filters whipsaw.

2 · On-Balance Volume — the confirmation

OBV adds the day's volume when price closes up and subtracts it when price closes down, so it tracks whether volume is arriving on the buying or the selling side. Here it must be above its own 20-day average and higher than it was five days ago before a long setup counts. Price making highs while OBV drifts sideways is distribution, and the filter blocks it.

3 · Keltner Channel — the entry

A 20-day EMA with bands two ATRs above and below. In an uptrend the entry is a pullback to the middle band or lower while price still holds inside the channel — you buy the dip within the trend rather than chasing the breakout. In a downtrend the logic mirrors: sell rallies into the middle or upper band. Entering near the band puts your stop close to your entry, which is what makes the risk small.

Putting it together

  1. Monthly close above the 10-month SMA → long side only.
  2. OBV above its 20-day average and rising → buyers confirmed.
  3. Price pulls back to the Keltner basis or below, but closes inside the channel → entry.
  4. Risk is defined from the entry, targeting roughly three units of reward per unit risked.

Screening for names near 52-week highs before applying the filters biases the list toward instruments already in demonstrated uptrends — the column on the right of the table.
